Guinea’s junta said last Friday that it had given local bauxite miners another ten days to submit a timetable for building alumina refineries. The originally planned deadline was the end of May.

As of June 9, none of the companies has submitted their plans.

As of now, Guinea has only one alumina refinery, the Friguia refinery owned by Russia’s aluminum giant RUSAL. RUSAL also operates two bauxite mines in Guinea.

CRU, a commodity market analyst, expected that six companies have plans for alumina refineries in Guinea, involving a total capacity of 11 million tons a year, most of which are at early stages.
