Red Sea crisis reduces container ship idleness

15 Apr 2024 16:38 reported by Edison Wu

Lloyd's List analysts suggested the possibility of the Suez Canal crisis persisting for several years. If rerouting continues until 2025, the charter market, particularly for smaller vessels, will remain robust, buoyed by increased container ship demand and reduced idle capacity to pre-pandemic levels.

The market outlook depends on the duration of the African detour and the expiration of existing long-term leases. Larger vessels remain fully booked, impacting new charter business availability. The crisis balances supply and demand, potentially influencing vessel sizes and lease preferences, especially for smaller ships.
