Bernardo Velázquez, president of the Spanish steel industry association Unesid, said the Spanish steel industry needs more government support in reducing emissions. Velázquez pointed out that under current conditions, carbon reduction targets are only technically feasible but not economically feasible. The association asked the government to use 25% of the revenue from the auction of carbon dioxide emission rights to compensate for the additional costs of energy-intensive industries, which is allowed by EU regulations.

Spanish Industry Minister Jordi Hereu confirmed at the meeting that the government will launch a EUR140 million aid plan in September, which is a part of the fourth batch of aid under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
