Asia's port congestion to persist amid rising Red Sea attacks

4 Jul 2024 16:21 reported by Ranny Fang

A A A
The congestion at Asia's busy trade hub ports will likely persist until August, as more ships avoid crowded gateways, causing bottlenecks at other ports. In the meantime, the Red Sea crisis continues with a record number of attacks on commercial vessels by Yemen's Houthi forces last month.

Singapore Port, the world's second-largest container port, has seen longer queues of ships waiting for berths. Many vessels avoiding the Red Sea are rerouting through Singapore, causing delays. Some ships are diverted to Malaysia's Port Klang and Tanjung Pelepas, shifting congestion there. This issue is expected to take at least a month to resolve.
