The global renewable energy power generation will exceed coal-fired power generation for the first time in 2025, according to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The report indicates that the proportion of renewable energy, including hydropower, solar energy, and wind energy, is expected to climb from 30% in 2023 to 35% in the global electricity supply in 2025. In the meantime, global electricity supply will be less dependent on coal, with coal's share falling from 36% to 33% over the same period. Among them, solar photovoltaics and wind power are at the forefront of this transformation.

The IEA mentioned that the surge in global electricity demand reflects the growing role of electricity in the economy and also highlights the challenges to power systems caused by extreme climate events.

Keisuke Sadamori, the IEA Director for Energy Markets and Security, said that the share of clean energy in the power structure must accelerate to achieve international energy and climate goals, and he also called on countries to implement higher energy efficiency standards.
