Taiwan to enforce stricter container weight limits from Oct 2024, raising shipping costs for steel industry

Taiwan's Highway Bureau will strictly implement the container size and weight limit from October 1, 2024. The new regulations for CY20-foot containers allow a total weight of 31.5 tons. After deducting approximately 11 tons for the tractor and trailer and around 2.5 tons for the empty container, the cargo weight needs to be controlled within 18 tons.

For the CY40-foot container, the total weight is allowed to be 42 tons. After deducting approximately 12.5 tons for the tractor and trailer and around 5 tons for the empty container, the cargo weight will be within 24.5 tons.

As a result, shipping costs in the steel industry might increase. Due to the weak demand, the local steel industry faced a big challenge to offset the high shipping cost and might not be competitive after adding the new shipping cost. The steel industry hopes Taiwan's government could study and reconsider adjusting the new measure for container size and weight limit.
