Vale’s Onça Puma nickel plant stops operations due to storm damage to power service

8 Oct 2024 15:13 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Vale S.A. (Vale), a Brazilian multinational corporation engaged in metals and mining, has temporarily stopped the operations at its Onça Puma nickel plant in Pará state as a strong windstorm destroyed the local electricity company’s transmission network on October 5.

Vale expected there would be an impact on the fourth-quarter nickel production of 1,500 to 2,000 tons; however, the company kept its annual nickel output forecast of 153,000 to 168,000 tons for this year.

The power transmission network was expected to be restored by October 15. Vale said it would continue assessing the impact of the operation halt on nickel production at Onça Puma and the measures required to resume full operations.
