Canada’s west coast ports paralyzed by labor strike, disrupting $800M daily trade flow

6 Nov 2024 15:27 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
A labor strike by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514 shut down key Canadian West Coast ports, including Vancouver and Prince Rupert, halting immediate cargo movement. These ports handle around US$800 million in daily trade, with approximately 20% of US trade passing through Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

The strike follows the expiration of Local 514’s contract in March and a 96% strike approval in September. Union members launched the strike after failing to reach a deal with industry representatives, bringing port operations to a standstill. The disruption has potential ripple effects for U.S.-bound trade, especially for goods like chemicals, automotive parts, and apparel.

Port closures could further congest American West Coast ports as carriers divert cargo, threatening supply chain stability as the holiday season approaches. Negotiations, led by federal mediators, remain deadlocked over automation and wage issues.
