Mexican government to support automotive industry in response to Trump policies

Mexico's automotive industry, one of the country's key economic industries, will strengthen its value chain with the support of the new administration under President Claudia Sheinbaum. The government will also participate in the next round of reviews for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico's minister of economy, along with other federal officials, met with top executives from major automotive assembly companies in Mexico City.

The Mexican automotive industry includes light vehicles, heavy vehicles, and automotive components, making it a cornerstone of the national economy. It accounts for 1/3 of Mexico's total exports.

However, with Trump’s 2nd term beginning on January 20, 2025, the Mexican automotive industry faces increased risks. During his first presidency (2017-2021), Trump previously threatened American automakers to invest in Mexico, leading Ford to cancel its US$1.6 billion investment plan to build a new factory in Mexico in 2017.

Moreover, Trump recently threatened to impose new tariffs on vehicles manufactured in Mexico, adding pressure to the industry.

In response, Mexico's Ministry of Economy has initiated discussions with automotive companies and the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) to work out counterstrategies.
