Green steel prospects: How Ukraine can support EU decarbonization

2 Jan 2025 16:10 reported by Windy Wu

A A A
Ukraine has the potential to supply 20-25 million tons of raw materials for DRI production, meeting 14% of global demand and supporting EU decarbonization.

With large reserves of high-quality magnetite ore, Ukraine is well-positioned to host DRI projects. Key companies like Metinvest and Ferrexpo are planning significant expansions, while projects by ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih and Black Iron could resume after the war.

Ukraine is shifting towards green steel, aiming to produce 6 million tons of low-carbon steel by 2030.

Investment support from European funding is essential to drive these initiatives and integrate Ukraine into European value chains.
