SSAB is making strides to produce carbon-free steel by 2030, with the help of GE Vernova and SMS Group, aiming for a more sustainable steel industry.

SSAB, a Swedish steelmaker, has teamed up with GE Vernova and SMS Group to transform its steel plant in Oxelösund. The companies signed a contract in June 2024 to install a new direct feed system for a 280 MVA electric arc furnace (EAF). This advanced technology will help SSAB use up to 100% recycled steel scrap, cutting CO2 emissions significantly, from 2.32 to just 0.67 metric tons per ton of steel.

The system, powered by cutting-edge IEGT transistor technology, will ensure a stable power supply and improve energy efficiency at the plant. GE Vernova’s Ed Torres said this partnership is a crucial step toward reducing emissions in the steel industry.

With this new technology, SSAB aims to reach its carbon-free steel production goal by 2030, setting a new standard for sustainability in the steel industry.
