Mexico outstands on green steel field with low carbon emissions

7 Jan 2025 16:24 reported by Ellen Huang

A A A
Mexico’s steel industry has a good advantageous stand on green steel as 95% of the steel production is through electric arc furnaces (EAF) which emit the lowest CO2 into the atmosphere compared to the US, Latin America, and Europe.

Steel production is one of the most pollutant industries, which emits most of the CO2 into the atmosphere. For 2020, per ton steel average emitted 1.89 tons of CO2. The US emitted 1.9 tons of CO2 per ton of steel, China emitted 2.7 tons of CO2 per ton of steel, while Mexico only emitted 1.6 tons of CO2 per ton of steel.

It is an outstanding advantage for Mexico, which stood out as an example in a meeting with OECD member countries.
