Alcoa: Trump’s 25% aluminum tariff would lead to loss of 100,000 US industry jobs

4 Mar 2025 14:43 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Alcoa Corp., a leading aluminum producer in the US, warned that President Trump’s 25% tariff on aluminum imports, set to take effect on March 4, could lead to a loss of around 100,000 US jobs, including 20,000 in the aluminum industry and 80,000 in related sectors.

Bill Oplinger, President and CEO of Alcoa, stated that while the tariff aims to boost US aluminum production, it is unlikely to prompt Alcoa to restart some of its closed US plants due to high electricity costs or to make investment decisions owing to the unknown duration of the tariff. The plant closures in recent years have made the US remain heavily reliant on aluminum imports.
