Canada heads to election amid US trade tensions

24 Mar 2025 15:11 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to launch Canada into an election campaign, with US President Donald Trump’s trade war intensifying economic concerns. Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will vie to convince voters they can best shield Canada from Trump’s threats of economic pressure.

Both leaders pledged to address long-standing economic challenges, including reliance on US trade, internal trade barriers, and weak business investment. Carney has already announced measures to streamline cross-country trade and accelerate energy project approvals.

Housing affordability, government spending, and productivity will also shape the race. With Canada’s economy at a crossroads, this election could redefine the nation’s economic direction as it seeks to reduce dependence on the US market.
