ArcelorMittal Calvert, a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal, has reached a partnership agreement with Austrian company Andritz to build an annealing and coating line at its Alabama-based electrical steel plant.

The project includes a 1650 mm wide cold rolling mill (with a maximum rolling speed of 1000 meters per minute, capable of processing 0.2-0.5 mm thin plates) and a fully electric annealing and coating line. Once operational, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons of non-grain oriented electrical steel (NOES).

The new electric heating annealing process completely replaces traditional fossil fuels, achieving zero-carbon production.

The CEO of ArcelorMittal North America emphasized that this initiative will strengthen the resilience of the local supply chain, while Andritz’s CEO stated that the company will continue to promote the green transition.
