Carney wins Canadian election as anti-Trump message resonates with voters

2 May 2025 15:37 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
Mark Carney and Canada’s Liberal Party have secured an unexpected victory in the national election, a win seemingly influenced by US President Donald Trump’s provocative rhetoric. Since returning to office in January, Trump has repeatedly taunted Canada, calling it America’s “51st state” and questioning the legitimacy of the border, comments that helped shift momentum away from Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives.

Carney, a political newcomer and former Bank of England chief, focused his campaign on resisting US pressure. In his victory speech, he warned President Trump is trying to break Canada so that America can own them. That will never ever happen. With Canada’s economy heavily tied to the US, Carney has pledged to quickly open trade talks.
