Taiwan's screw industry impacted by rapid NTD appreciation

9 May 2025 15:17 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Taiwan's screw manufacturers, heavily reliant on exports, are feeling significant pressure from the rapid appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar (NTD) against the US dollar, nearing the NT$30 mark. Despite central bank intervention, the swift currency surge is considered more damaging than Trump's tariffs.

Although exporters typically hedge against exchange rate fluctuations, the sudden and sharp appreciation has caught many off guard, negating previous hedging efforts.

Screw producers said the rise in the NTD effectively offset the 3-5% price reduction they had reluctantly made to US customers due to tariff pressure, equivalent to the 15% price cut they had initially requested. The industry faces considerable challenges due to this unexpected currency volatility.
