Persistent port congestion in Northern Europe expected through July

3 Jun 2025 15:25 reported by Rita Su

Major container ports across Northern Europe, including Antwerp, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven, are experiencing escalating congestion, with vessel wait times ranging from several days to over two weeks, according to Bloomberg. The delays stem from a combination of factors: recent labor strikes, low water levels on the Rhine limiting barge capacity, and high yard utilization at terminals.

Shipping lines are rerouting vessels and applying congestion surcharges, while terminals restrict empty container returns. The early transpacific peak season and US tariff uncertainty are adding further pressure.

Port delays are also reported in China and the US, raising global concerns. Analysts warn of longer lead times and higher shipping costs as global supply chains remain under stress.
