According to the report, Matson, a major US shipping company, announced that it will suspend the transportation of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with immediate effect. The decision stems from growing safety concerns over lithium-ion batteries, which are classified as dangerous goods due to their fire risk.
This move directly impacts vehicle shipping routes between the US mainland and key Pacific markets, including Hawaii, Guam, and Alaska, regions where Matson plays a dominant role in automotive logistics. For now, Matson will continue transporting traditional fuel-powered vehicles and maintain its barge and inter-island container services within the Hawaiian Islands.
