Canada & Mexico discuss trade cooperation amid US tariff tensions

8 Aug 2025 15:25 reported by Stanley Wang

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne held a meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and senior officials in Mexico City. The visit focused on bilateral cooperation as both nations face a shifting US tariff landscape under President Donald Trump.

Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard noted that talks would address each country's policy responses to recent US tariff measures. Canada currently faces a 35% duty on many goods, up from a previous 25% tariff. Mexico, meanwhile, secured a 90-day pause on a planned 30% tariff, allowing time for trade negotiations.

Anand stated that the discussions advanced key shared priorities, including economic growth, security, and trade diversification. Canada and Mexico also agreed to develop a cooperation plan covering resilient supply chains, port-to-port trade routes, artificial intelligence, and energy security.
