European Automobile Manufacturers' Association dissatisfied with EU's new steel import control rules

On October 7, the European Commission announced it would significantly reduce tariff-free steel import quotas and impose a 50% tariff on steel imported outside the quota. It would also take measures to strengthen the traceability of steel's origin.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) issued a statement saying the Commission's move would push up prices for related products, exacerbating inflation.

The association stated that even though the automobile industry is highly dependent on EU steel supplies, automakers still need to import certain quantities and qualities of steel products, and the European Commission should conduct a specific assessment of the circumstances of the industry.

Furthermore, the Commission should recognize that the automotive supply chain is highly globalized, making the application of new rules of origin extremely complex.
