Voestalpine reduces capacity & continues its restructuring in response to persistently weak demand

Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine recently announced its first-half results for the fiscal year 2025/26. Revenue fell to EUR 7.6 billion, a 5.6% year-on-year decrease, impacted by US tariff pressures, low oil prices, and weak global demand. The company anticipates a difficult economic environment in the coming months and will reduce capacity at its Kinderberg and Mulzuschlag plants, while continuing restructuring in its automotive parts and high-performance metals divisions.

Voestalpine noted that demand from the energy sector remains weak, and the sluggish European auto market has also dragged down the automotive parts division; however, demand for automotive steel in its steel division remains relatively stable.

Despite the challenging environment, the company has maintained its resilience, with a sound balance sheet. Voestalpine also emphasized that future projects, such as the hydrogen-based reduction demonstration plant, will be key to strengthening its long-term competitiveness.
