Tata Steel Nederland to acquire Vattenfall’s power assets in IJmond region

Tata Steel Nederland has inked an agreement to acquire Vattenfall’s energy assets in the IJmond region, a move to strengthen its energy independence. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition grants Tata Steel Nederland full control over the power generation units, which primarily run on residual gases from the steel production process, not natural gas or coal. Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, said that the expiration of the current contract in late 2025 offered an opportune moment for full control, enabling better management of the phased transition to a low-carbon, green steel operation.

The complex, which includes three stations, employs around 116 employees who will transfer to Tata Steel Nederland when the assets are officially handed over on January 1, 2026. The deal has received regulatory approval.
