US seizes second oil tanker off Venezuela after Trump orders sanctions blockade

22 Dec 2025 14:47 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
The United States seized an oil tanker that recently departed from Venezuela, marking the second seizure of an oil-carrying vessel off the country’s coast this month, according to the US Department of Homeland Security. The move follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a blockade targeting sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

The operation was led by the US Coast Guard, similar to the operation earlier this month. While the ship itself is not listed among sanctioned vessels, the White House later said its cargo contained sanctioned oil from Venezuela’s state-run company PDVSA and described the tanker as part of a Venezuelan shadow fleet. Venezuela condemned the seizure as theft and kidnapping and said it would file complaints with the UN Security Council and other international bodies.
