New tariffs in Canada and Mexico threaten Taiwan’s fastener exports

30 Dec 2025 15:51 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Taiwanese fastener manufacturers face potential trade disruptions as Canada and Mexico implement significant tariff hikes.

Effective on December 26, 2025, Canada imposed a 25% surtax on steel derivatives, specifically including all screw products under HS code 7318. This measure aims to protect local steel producers and directly impacts Taiwan’s fifth-largest export market.

Meanwhile, Mexico will raise duties on various goods from January 1, 2026. The status of screws remains unclear, while new taxes on imported steel will range
from 20% to 50%.

Canada and Mexico represent the main destinations for high-value automotive fasteners. Market participants worry these combined policies will create a new wave of financial pressure on global exporters, similar to recent trade challenges in the US.
