India's DGS advises clear fee communication to protect exporters and importers

India’s Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has issued an advisory cautioning shipping lines, carriers, and their agents against predatory or non‑transparent pricing amid ongoing Middle East tensions.

The announcement follows consultations with exporters and importers, who reported that some carriers were charging excessive additional fees, undermining fair trade. The government has pledged to act against such opportunistic practices.

DGS urged all operators to clearly communicate all applicable charges in advance to prevent disputes and ensure transparency. The advisory emphasizes that adherence to fairness and clear pricing is essential to maintain the smooth flow of import and export operations during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

By reinforcing these principles, DGS aims to protect exporters and importers from unfair practices while sustaining stability and trust in India’s shipping and logistics ecosystem.
