Mauritania, the second largest iron ore producer in Africa, plans to double its iron ore production capacity to more than 45 million tons per year by 2030. According to the African Development Bank, a multilateral financing institution, Mauritania's iron ore production has increased from 13 million tons in 2022 to 14 million tons in 2023.

Mauritania currently has 20 billion tons of untapped iron ore reserves. In order to achieve production goals and cooperate with the global shift to green steel manufacturing, Mauritania will focus on producing high-quality iron ore and developing iron ore pellets. Besides, Mauritania will increase investment in the production of green hydrogen and develop new natural gas fields.
