South Africa’s Columbus Stainless seeking government's restriction on scrap exports

18 Nov 2024 15:41 reported by Joy Liu

Columbus Stainless, a producer of stainless steel flat products in South Africa, said the South African government should adopt measures to solve problems such as low steel demand and to protect the domestic industry from being injured by dumped imports.

The company stressed that the export of raw materials, including scrap, should be controlled to secure the competitiveness of the local steel industry, thereby benefiting the country itself due to cost savings and the environmentally friendly nature of scrap.

Using domestically produced scrap metal could minimize the carbon footprint related to steel production, so the government should actively reconsider banning scrap exports or retain export taxes on scrap, said Columbus Stainless.
