Minimal impact expected on nickel supply after Indonesia's suspension of smaller miners

26 Sep 2025 15:46 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has temporarily suspended the mining activities of 190 companies, including 39 nickel miners, for failing to provide required land reclamation and post-mining safeguards.

The administrative sanctions, which suspend activities for up to 60 days, apply primarily to companies in Central and Southeast Sulawesi. They can be lifted once the companies submit a reclamation plan and provide necessary assurances.

Market participants expect that the impact on global nickel supply will be minimal. The suspended 39 nickel miners have relatively small quotas, affecting only a few million wet tons of annual shipments. Indonesia's total extractable quota this year is substantial at 360 million tons, enough to keep nickel prices stable.
