Angola will start production at its first major copper mine, Tetelo Mine, on October 29. Angola's Mines Minister Diamantino Azevedo said at a conference that the Tetelo Mine will mark the start of the country’s first underground copper mine.
It is owned by Shining Star Icarus, which comprises China’s Shining Star International Group and Angola’s Sociedade Mineira de Cobre de Angola. It is projected to yield 25,000 metric tons of copper concentrate per year during its first two years of operation. The initial phase of operation will be open-pit mining, with underground operations slated to begin in the second half of 2026, according to Deputy Managing Director Rui Lopes of Shining Star Icarus.
