Malaysia’s scrap steel imports extend 16-month decline

Malaysia’s scrap steel imports kept falling in August 2025, reaching only 22,000 tons, a 37.7% drop from a year earlier and extending a 16-month period of year-on-year declines. Australia remained the top supplier with 7,000 tons, nearly 60% higher than last year’s level.

From January to August, total imports reached 115,000 tons, plummeting by 71.3% compared with the same period in 2024. Monthly volumes averaged around 14,000 tons, putting full-year imports near 170,000 tons. Australia supplied 50,000 tons, accounting for 43.5% of the total, while Singapore ranked second with a 23.5% share, though its shipments significantly dropped 69.7% year on year.
