Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture to cut jobs, shut ferrochrome smelters

20 Nov 2025 16:18 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
The Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture confirmed that it will commence retrenchments and place the Wonderkop and Boshoek ferrochrome smelters under care and maintenance, following the Section 189 process initiated on September 1 this year.

The Venture said that despite numerous meetings with the government, no viable solution, particularly regarding a competitive energy tariff, has been provided to address the severe operational challenges. Only the Lion Smelter will remain operational then.

The closures will begin within weeks, resulting in significant job losses and a devastating economic impact on employees and local communities. The Venture calls on all stakeholders to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and collaborate urgently on sustainable solutions.
