Heavy rainfall in northeast Australia disrupts coal mining & supply chains

19 Jan 2026 15:18 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
Heavy rainfall in northeast Australia has triggered flooding that is disrupting mine operations and hampering supplies of metallurgical coal in the region. Traders said some coal producers have declared force majeure on parts of their shipments or warned customers of possible delivery delays. The traders added that major miners such as Anglo American Plc and Glencore Plc have also been impacted by the flooding, although neither has declared force majeure.

The supply disruptions follow an unusually wet start to summer in Queensland, where some areas recorded rainfall close to their monthly averages weeks earlier than normal, partly due to Tropical Cyclone Koji. Forecasters warned another weather system could form, potentially worsening impacts on mining and transport.
