The first shipment of 1,450 tons of iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine in Tindouf province was transported on Tuesday for initial processing in Bechar. The mine holds an estimated 3.5 billion tons of iron ore, with 1.7 billion tons commercially exploitable, marking it as one of Algeria's largest mining projects.

The loading ceremony was attended by senior government ministers and mining officials, who inspected the loading process and logistical preparations. Officials stated the project aligns with national efforts to develop mining wealth and diversify the economy beyond hydrocarbons.

The initiative is expected to create jobs, boost steel industry activity, and enhance Algeria's position in non-hydrocarbon exports.
