Japan's scrap exports rise by 17.9% in 2025 despite Dec decline

According to Japanese customs data, Japan exported about 7.7 million tons of scrap in 2025, increasing by 17.9% compared to the previous year. Although exports in December fell by 4.4% year-on-year to roughly 695,300 tons, annual figures showed strong growth across key markets.

Among them, Vietnam remained the top destination, importing 3.28 million tons, up by 26.2% year on year. Bangladesh ranked second, with a surge of 130.4%, reaching 1.44 million tons, while South Korea’s imports dropped by 18.0% to 1.28 million tons. Also, exports to Indonesia rose by 178% to about 458,500 tons.
