Major Pilbara iron ore ports shut down as tropical cyclone nears

9 Feb 2026 15:30 reported by Yolanda Wang

A A A
Multiple major ports in Western Australia's Pilbara region were forcibly closed on Saturday (February 7) due to Tropical Cyclone Mitchell. The shutdown includes the globally critical Port Hedland, the world's largest iron ore export hub.

The strengthening cyclone is forecast to turn towards the coast and intensify into a category 3 cyclone. Destructive wind gusts up to 170 kph are predicted for the remote, resource-rich area.

Port Hedland is the world's largest iron ore export hub, serving major mining companies. The preemptive shutdown halts shipments from this significant resource region.
