Indonesia has imposed massive fines on four major nickel producers for illegal mining activities in North Maluku. The companies were found operating in forest areas without proper permits, facing penalties of up to IDR 6.5 billion per hectare.

Among them, PT Weda Bay Nickel received the largest fine, totaling more than IDR 4 trillion. Authorities also seized part of its mining land in a rare enforcement action.

The case has triggered political scrutiny,  highlighting the Indonesian government's determination to regulate the mining industry.
