India Green Steel Coalition warns of scrap gap as India pushes green steel transition

The India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) noted that India’s steel industry is accelerating its shift toward scrap-based secondary steelmaking to advance decarbonization, driving a rapid increase in demand.

With the growing demand for scrap, especially from electric arc furnace (EAF) and induction furnace (IF) based steelmakers, the government aims to raise the scrap usage ratio to 50% by 2047, with total demand expected to exceed 200 million tons in the long run.

However, limited recycling systems and supply capacity may lead to a shortfall of 40-50 million tons, increasing reliance on imports and exposure to price volatility.

IGSC recommends strengthening recycling mechanisms, improving the value chain, and enhancing policy support, while integrating low-carbon technologies to support long-term transformation.
