China eases import curbs on BHP iron ore, boosting supply outlook

16 Apr 2026 16:20 reported by Ranny Fang

A A A
China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG) has relaxed import restrictions on iron ore from BHP, allowing steel mills and traders to resume seaborne purchases. The move follows earlier limits on key products such as Newman fines, which had constrained access to the Australian supply.

Sources say transactions have resumed alongside agreements to restore US dollar settlements. The policy shift is expected to increase supply in the coming weeks, with market participants already adjusting expectations.

While existing port inventories remain restricted, market participants view the easing as positive, though many mills are adopting a wait-and-see approach before making further procurement decisions.
