India’s steel players criticize relaxed import curbs on stainless steel

3 Nov 2025 15:25 reported by Joy Liu

The Indian government has temporarily eased import restrictions, permitting the sale of certain non-BIS-compliant stainless steel products until December 31, 2025. This decision addresses a shortage of specific grades and prevents supply disruptions for importers who had made advance payments.

Domestic stainless steel manufacturers, however, have expressed strong opposition to the Steel Ministry. A market participant warned that consistent exemptions would lead to substandard steel flowing into India, affecting the recovery of local capital investments.

The industry also suggests that enough material will be imported under the exemption to meet demand until June, further weakening domestic producers who must continue to adhere to strict BIS standards.
