India's stainless steel market continues to struggle regardless of import relief

10 Nov 2025 14:57 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
India’s stainless steel market continues to lag, failing to defy expectations of a market recovery following the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) easing import restrictions. Although easier regulations quickly restored import volumes, domestic demand remains weak. Main stainless steel consumers, such as construction, automotive, and consumer goods, haven't ramped up their procurement, leading to a subdued market sentiment.

High inventory and slow end-user buying are keeping prices down and squeezing the margins of both traders and local producers. Domestic stainless steel mills are concerned that the temporary import waiver, which allows non-BIS-certified material until December 31, 2025, unfairly undermines them. The industry argues that stable long-term policies, not temporary fixes, are needed to reignite growth.
