China’s steel export limits expected to benefit Taiwan’s stainless steel mills

China’s new export licensing requirements for steel products, including all stainless steel products, offer an advantage to Taiwanese manufacturers such as Yieh United Steel Corp. (Yusco), Tang Eng, and Walsin Lihwa.

By imposing administrative hurdles on Chinese exports, which nearly reached 5 million tons this year, the policy addresses the persistent global oversupply and aggressive price wars.

Local industry experts expect two primary benefits. First, restricted Chinese supply stabilizes international prices, protecting the profit margins of Taiwanese firms. Second, global buyers seeking reliable delivery and quality may shift orders to Taiwan to avoid policy risks. This transition helps domestic mills secure high-value contracts, possibly ending the cycle of low-price competition that has long pressured the industry.
