Aperam, a global leader in stainless, electrical, and specialty steel, as well as recycling and renewables, has launched Grade 316A (1.4682), a patented austenitic stainless steel designed to replace the industry-standard 316L.

Developed by the Aperam Innovation Lab, this new grade provides the same mechanical strength and corrosion resistance as 316L (1.4404) but has a 25% lower alloy surcharge.

The breakthrough lies in a significant reduction of molybdenum, protecting users from price volatility while maintaining quality.

Stainless Europe and Services & Solutions Europe CEO Frederico Ayres Lima compares this advancement to the debut of super duplex steels, saying that 316A establishes a new, efficient cost baseline for high-performance applications. This certified material is available immediately, providing a practical solution for industries that require reliable protection against corrosion at a more affordable price point.
