Taiwan’s fastener industry faces rising costs as stainless steel prices surge

2 Jan 2026 16:04 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Taiwan’s major wire rod producers, Walsin Lihwa and Yieh Hsing, announced large January price hikes for 300-series stainless steel wire rods, with increases reaching up to NT$5,000/ton. This adjustment raises production costs for fastener manufacturers by roughly 4% to 5%, leaving many struggling to pass these expenses to overseas clients.

The surge is primarily fueled by Indonesia’s plan to cut 2026 nickel output by one-third, which pushed LME nickel prices to US$16,750/ton on December 31.

Besides, China’s implementation of a new export licensing system starting January 2026 is expected to decrease exports. This move aims to curb global oversupply and stabilize prices, and it creates a favorable environment for Taiwanese mills to maintain higher rates amid tightening international competition.
