LME nickel prices surge toward $17,900 on weaker US dollar

The London Metal Exchange (LME) nickel futures rose by US$185 yesterday (January 12), nearing the US$17,900 level after a two-day increase. This price hike follows a volatile session where values fluctuated by more than US$800, eventually closing at US$17,888/ton.

Market sentiment improved as the US dollar weakened, which occurred after the Department of Justice subpoenaed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, arousing worries regarding the central bank's autonomy.

In addition, optimism for industrial growth in China fueled expectations for increased demand. Despite current growth and a 7.5% rise this month, market participants expect short-term price fluctuations due to unclear mining policies in Indonesia.
