India temporarily waives BIS rules for specific stainless steel imports

2 Apr 2026 14:04 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
India’s Ministry of Steel announced an exemption from mandatory Indian Standards for three types of stainless steel flat products under IS 6911, IS 5522, and IS 15997. This relief applies to imports with shipping documents dated through September 30, 2026. Normally, these materials require a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) license to ensure quality adherence.

The government provided this flexibility to help businesses manage supply shortages while domestic production of 200 and 300-series stainless steel continues to increase. This decision matches a previous extension in November 2025, recognizing significant payments already made to overseas suppliers.

According to market participants, the move prevents project delays by securing timely raw materials for construction and manufacturing.
