ArcelorMittal produces first industrial coil on new Mardyck lines

Teams from the electrical steels department at ArcelorMittal’s Mardyck site in Nord successfully produced the first industrial coil on newly installed production lines, marking a key milestone in the project. The achievement will enable further adjustments and refinements to industrial tools and processes, supporting a gradual ramp-up toward full validation of all lines and consistent delivery of high-quality products.

The electrical steels produced at Mardyck and Saint-Chély-d’Apcher are critical for e-mobility development and the broader energy transition. They are used in electric motors and generators for automotive applications, wind turbines, and industrial equipment.

Up to 400 people contributed to the project, including construction and initial testing across the preparation, annealing-coating, and slitting lines. The first coil weighs over 17 tons and measures nearly 4 kilometers. The new line is expected to triple ArcelorMittal’s electrical steel capacity in Europe to 295,000 tons annually, with all production based in France.
