South Africa to launch steel industry probe to bolster competitiveness

21 Apr 2023 14:01 reported by Vicky Wang

A A A
The Competition Commission of South Africa has announced that it will conduct a market survey of the steel industry to see if there is any combination of characteristics that hinder or limit competition in the steel industry.

The inquiry will focus only on producers of raw materials such as iron ore, coking coal, or upstream steelmaking, seeking to promote effective competition and address supply constraints and procurement costs while also focusing on measures to promote the expansion of steelmakers. Existing iron and steel enterprises are facing market problems, and the relevant mechanisms of steel mill closures will also be investigated.
