Swedish steelmaker SSAB has announced a SEK 3.3 billion investment to build a new quenching line (Q&T) at its Oxelösund plant. The line is set to start production in 2030, adding roughly 100,000 tons of annual capacity for advanced steels, including wear steels. The four-year project is included in SSAB’s 2025 strategic capital spending plan.

The expansion will boost SSAB’s ability to meet rising global demand for high-performance steel, especially in defense, heavy equipment, and transport applications. The new line focuses on improving wear resistance, lightweight design, and structural strength, key qualities for specialty steel in demanding environments.

For SSAB, the Oxelösund expansion is a strategic move to strengthen its position in the premium steel segment. By deepening its footprint in markets that require high-performance materials, the company reinforces its focus on advanced steel solutions.

Rising defense budgets worldwide, driven by recent geopolitical shifts, have increased demand for protection steel and other specialty products. SSAB’s investment captures this trend, positioning it for growth in the defense steel market.

Overall, the expansion helps SSAB boost its competitiveness in high-value-added products, laying a solid foundation for long-term growth in Europe and beyond.
