Namibia has commenced the Oshivela project, which is supported by the German government. It is Africa's first large iron production project using green hydrogen as fuel.

This investment is a significant initiative. The project initially involves an investment of EUR 13 million and is set to begin production by the end of 2024, with a target annual output of 15,000 tons of direct reduced iron.

According to the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), the project is expected to create more than 50 job opportunities.

Rainer Baake, the Special Commissioner for German-Namibian Climate and Energy Cooperation, emphasized the potential for sponge iron produced in Germany to be used for manufacturing environmentally friendly steel for wind turbines or automobiles.
